I recently came across a video where someone said not to show up authentically in your business content, instead advising to show up professionally. My immediate reaction was, “There’s a way to be both.” Being authentic can open doors you didn’t even know existed for your business.

Personal vs. Business on Social Media

The videos we share on Sandbox Collab’s accounts on TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms reflect our authentic selves. For example, if you have both a personal TikTok and a business page, there should be a clear connection between who you are and how your business presents itself in social spaces.

Selling Yourself

Selling who you are is one of your most valuable assets. If someone connects with you, whether in person or online, they’re more likely to give your business a chance. Why?

Because they feel like they already know you. You started your business, so in many ways, you are your brand.

Staying True to You

If you’re funny, lean into it. If you’re great at explaining things, showcase that. If you’re a storyteller, tell your stories. Those strengths will shine through in your content. Don’t try to be someone you’re not—your target audience can always tell.

What Not to Do

Of course, there are unspoken rules of what not to do. While authenticity is powerful, a few pitfalls can undermine it:
  • Don’t overshare personal struggles in real time. Vulnerability matters, but sharing every detail of a crisis as it unfolds can blur boundaries and make your audience uncomfortable. Share lessons after the fact, not the raw chaos.
  • Don’t imitate someone else’s style. Chasing trends that don’t fit you will feel forced. Authenticity loses its impact when it’s just a copy of someone else’s personality.
  • Don’t make it all about the sale. Constantly pushing your product or service without first building trust can drive people away. Social media is about relationships first, conversions second.
  • Don’t ignore your audience. Authentic presence also means listening. Failing to reply to comments, messages, or feedback makes your brand feel one-sided.
  • Don’t separate “professional” and “authentic” into two masks. The goal isn’t to play a role— it’s to let your real self shine through in a professional way.

Bringing It Together

Today, people are curious about the faces behind the brand. They don’t just want to know what you sell; they want to know who they’re buying from. Show up consistently, share your personality, and build real trust. That’s what keeps people coming back; not a polished facade, but a genuine connection. With the right intention and strategy, you can do both, and that’s exactly where Sandbox Collab comes in to help.
